4 Things You Need To Do Before Installing Sprinkler Systems

Posted on: 1 February 2018

If you are tired of manually watering your yard, change things up this year and install a sprinkler system. Before you start digging though, there are some things that you need to do before you start installing sprinkler systems.

Check on a Building Permit

First, you need to check and find out if you need a building permit in order to install your sprinklers in your yard. Building rules vary a lot from one state to the next, and can even vary within a state, so you want to make sure that you have the proper permission and authority before you make major changes to your property. You don't want to have to pay a fine down the line or have to rip out or change your sprinkler system because you didn't get the right permits or it doesn't fit with local building code or your homeowner's association rules.

Call Your Utilities

Second, before you start digging, you need to call your utility companies. You need to check find out if there are any underground electric, gas or water lines in your yard. You need to know exactly where they are and how far down they any wires or pipes are located. Cutting into power, water, and gas lines can be highly disruptive and dangerous as well. Have them come out to your house and check for utilities before you being a project as big as putting in sprinklers.

Watering Ordinances

Many municipals have watering ordinances about how you can water your lawn and how long you can water you long, as well as how much water you can use. You want to make sure that your sprinkler set-up works with local watering ordinances. Once again, you don't want to have to back and change your system later.

Landscape Design

Finally, you need to know how you want your yard to look over the long term. You need to have a clear vision of your landscaping design for your house so that you know where to put sprinklers and what type of watering systems to put down. Knowing how you want your yard to look now and in the future will help you create a water system that will work for your long term needs.

Before you install a sprinkler system, figure out if you need a building permit, learn about local watering ordinances, call your utility companies and make sure that you have a landscaping plan in mind. Contact a landscape company, like Noble Tree Service Inc. , for more help.

Keeping Your Trees Healthy

About a year ago, I realized that our front trees were starting to look a little funny. Some of the leaves were wilted, but we weren't anywhere near autumn. The bark on the trunk also seemed to be rotting away, which was frustrating and disappointing. Fortunately, a friend of mine told me to call a professional arborist for help. He came out, inspected the trees, and injected some special pesticides into the trunk. Within a few months, they started to look a lot better. Our arborist also trimmed our trees to reduce the weight load on the branches and to improve their shape. Check out this blog for information about tree trimming.
