Having A Tree Removed? Follow These Tips

Posted on: 5 April 2023

If you have a dead, dangerous, or deteriorating tree on your property, then the best approach is typically to have that tree removed. Luckily, a tree removal company can do the hard and dangerous parts of this for you. They can use sharp saws to remove the large branches and eventually cut through the whole trunk. They can make sure the tree does not fall on your home or anything else of value. You, as the homeowner, won't have to do a whole lot when it comes to removing the tree. However, there are a few tips you will benefit from following in this situation.

Get more than one quote.

Different tree removal companies have different equipment. One might have a technologically advanced picker tool that lets them take down a tree in a few hours. Another may use more basic equipment, such as ropes and chainsaws. One setup may be more suited to your particular tree than another, which means one tree company may charge quite a different rate than another. As such, it's always worth getting multiple quotes before you have a tree removed.

Schedule it in the spring or fall, if possible.

If the tree is not an immediate threat, the best time to have it removed is either in the early spring before it gets leaves, or in the autumn once the leaves have fallen. It's easier for a tree removal company to work without leaves getting in the way. The ground also tends to be softer during these seasons, which makes it easier for the pros to remove stumps.

Ask what the company's default plan is for the wood.

Once the tree is down, the next question is what happens to the wood. Every tree removal company has its own approach to this part of the process. Some keep the wood by default. Others split the wood and stack it, but leave it there for you to use. More rarely, a company may knock the tree down, but leave the entire process of cutting and removing it to you, the homeowner. Ask what the company's default is so you can find ways to work with it. For instance, if they leave the wood behind but you don't need it, you could ask friends if anyone needs firewood and have those friends come remove it.

Luckily, tree removal companies do the hard part of tree removal. If you follow the tips above, you'll be ahead of the game when it comes to your part.

Keeping Your Trees Healthy

About a year ago, I realized that our front trees were starting to look a little funny. Some of the leaves were wilted, but we weren't anywhere near autumn. The bark on the trunk also seemed to be rotting away, which was frustrating and disappointing. Fortunately, a friend of mine told me to call a professional arborist for help. He came out, inspected the trees, and injected some special pesticides into the trunk. Within a few months, they started to look a lot better. Our arborist also trimmed our trees to reduce the weight load on the branches and to improve their shape. Check out this blog for information about tree trimming.
